Designing the Intro Quests

Artix Krieger | Thursday, April 7, 2016

As AdventureQuest 3D opens, you will be thrown into WAR. The Guardians will be at the heart of the conflict, defending against a powerful enemy force. I have always had a strict rule about how our games should always start bright and inviting. But as we are "aging this game up" it feels right to inject you into a desperate situation smothered with doom and battle. The entire area will offer up subtle clues about what is to come.

A few weeks ago Cysero, Yergen, and I met to brainstorm the initial concept for AdventureQuest 3D's intro. We really want it to be a cinematic experience. Something you would show your friends and say, "This is so cool! Come do this with me."  Our primary goal is make an incredible intro that immediately connects you to the world, the characters, and gives you a direction.

I am posting a few of Llusion's concept paintings for you to see. While we are trying to keep this part pretty serious, it has been hard to find suitable images to post since the team keeps making joke captions on all of the dialog mockups.

We concepted a huge number of potential BOSS monsters for the War... well, Dage and Thyton did. All of them are amazing. Any that are not used for this will definitely be used for future areas. Everyone on the AdventureQuest 3D team are friends, but that does not stop us from having healthy debates! Some of us want to put the baddest, craziest, weirdest monsters up first. Some of us want to start off smaller and build up to crazier things. There are strong arguments for both. One thing is for sure... none of us want to do anything normal!

A few notes after reading the comments on Facebook and the Previous post-- Grimsbane will not appear in the intro. What he/she/it actually is... and looks like for that matter are carefully guarded secrets that must be revealed later. And yes, the Guardians are a vital part of AdventureQuest 3D's storyline. While it is not necessary to upgrade and get the Guardian access to play the entire main story as the game grows/unfolds, it will unlock bonus stuff that will take you deeper.

Did you ever play DragonFable? If so, here is an insider secret. The story we went with for DragonFable was not the original story idea we were going to use. That dragon box that you get at the start of the game was not actually supposed to have a Dragon Egg inside of it. Sure, it makes sense that it did... since it was called *coughs* DRAGON-Fable and all :D But the box was supposed to contain something else entirely. Further more, the secrets that the Guardian Towers were supposed to be defending were not originally Elemental Orbs. Perhaps in AdventureQuest 3D we will finally get a chance to go crazy with plan A-- we think you can handle it.
